Paul Arnison's "hunger" appealed to Stuart McCall

Posted on: Thu 19 Jun 2008

Stuart McCall believes new defensive capture Paul Arnison can improve the quality of City's build-up play.

McCall beat off competition from Port Vale and Darlington for the right back, who was released by Carlisle United at the end of last season.

The 30-year-old won promotion from the bottom division two years ago with the Cumbrians and McCall is backing him to bring that quality and experience to Valley Parade.

Talking to the Telegraph & Argus McCall said: "The first thing you always look for is that he is a good defender but Paul also uses the ball very well. He is comfortable on it and does not waste possession.

"There were times last season when we didn't build up play as well as we might and link up between the defence and midfield. But that is one of his strengths, as well as getting beyond the winger at times.

"In Darren Williams' defence, when you are playing behind the likes of Joe Colbeck and Omar Daley, it's difficult to do that because of their pace. But if we play Chris Brandon out there on occasions and he drifts inside, then it will give Paul the opportunity."

Arnison, who has signed a two-year deal, made 139 appearances with the Cumbrians after joining from home-town club Hartlepool. But he started only 11 games last term.

McCall added: "His hunger to play games appealed to me. He is desperate to be involved and play his part in a successful team.

"Everything added up with him. Paul was our first choice for the position and he came within the budget for a full back so we're delighted."
