Although he was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, George Williamson began his League club career with Middlesbrough, whom he joined in 1945 after having played for Newcastle Boys before the war.

However after two years with First Division 'Boro, Williamson had still to make his League debut and in July 1947 he signed for Chester. In three seasons at Sealand Road, he made 75 League appearances and in June 1950 was transferred to Bradford City to begin what proved to be the most rewarding period of his career.

At first he battled to establish himself, but he went on to become one of the most outstanding personalities at Valley Parade in the 1950's. All this came after he was one of a complete team offered up for transfer in January 1952. He settled in at right half and in 1955/56 was one of five ever-presents in City's team, a club record which was equaled two seasons later.

In 1954/55 he had been used to pep up a shot-shy attack and responded with six goals, which made him leading scorer. He converted to centre-half for the remainder of his career with Bradford City.

Following his Testimonial game against Airdrieonians in April 1957 he moved to Colwyn Bay United where he was later to become player/manager. He ended his career with Oswestry Town in 1960 and passed away on 07 April 1994 aged 68 years old.
