John Hallows
Even as an orphan at St. Edmund's in his native Liverpool (where he had been since the age of 5) John showed great footballing ability and was soon parading his skills with Liverpool Bluecoats FC.
With the West Midlands side Willenhall Swifts, Hallows continued to find the net regularly but he then spent a few unproductive months with West Bromwich Albion before being released.
He was soon scoring freely again, this time with Kent side Grays Thurrocks and in November 1930, Bradford City signed him for £600.
Hallows scored 5 goals when Barnsley were hammered 9-1 in January 1932 and that remains a club record score for an individual in a single match above Division 3.
In March 1936 Barnsley signed him no doubt hoping that he could do for them what he had done against them!
However he was only to make 13 League appearances at Oakwell before retiring.
He died in August 1963.
