Peter Allan Jackson
career as a schoolboy centre-forward before moving into defence while at school. After being released by Burnley, who had signed him on associate schoolboy forms for a few months in the 1975/76 season, he was given a three-month trial at Valley Parade and in July 1977 was offered an apprenticeship with City.
Shortly after his League debut he was offered a full time professional contract and began a career which saw him impressive and constant displays in the City defence.
Jackson's career progressed so much that Newcastle United equaled their record transfer payment when they paid £250,000 for his services in October 1986; and it was also five times more than City had previously received for a player. At St. James' Park Jackson continued to shine and in his first season in Division 1 he was voted Magpies' Player of the Year.
