Apart from a spell as an ameateur player with Leeds United, midfielder Bruce Stowell spent almost all of his footballing career in his native Bradford.

He had a good record in schools and local club football representing Bradford Schools against Glasgow.

He signed for Bradford City as an amateur in May 1958, turning part-time professional in December that year but did not become a full-timer until June 1967.

Bruce's 344th League game, at home to Walsall in October 1970, broke George Robinson's 55-year old club record.

In July 1972 he moved to Rotherham United on a free transfer and after only 16 League games for the Millers he joined Australian club Pan Hellenic, later coaching Sydney Olympic and the Queensland State side.

1980 saw him come out of retirement to play for Blacktown City.

In all Stowell made 417 League appearances, his last coming against Swansea City at Millmoor in February 1973.
