The Bantams fully played their part in a goalless draw with high-flying host Port Vale.

Enjoying the better of the second half, City saw James Hanson hit the crossbar with a header from a Carl McHugh cross early after the restart.

The striker, along with Rory McArdle, also then had chances kicked clear from right in front of his own goal by Richard Duffy following a Gary Jones corner later in the half.

With the game in its closing stages, Vale captain Doug Loft was given a straight red card for a late challenge on Ricky Ravenhill.

Before the City-dominated second period, Micky Adams' hosts probably just edged a keenly-contested opening half.

Vale, in fact, could have actually found themselves in the lead at the interval but for a truly stunning one-handed save by Jon McLaughlin from a Tom Pope header.

With his body weight taking him in the opposition direction, McLaughlin somehow managed to stop himself in time to thrust out his left hand and turn a thumping goal-bound Pope header around the post.

MATCH UPDATES:

FT: Port Vale 0 Bradford City 0

90+6min: Reid's teasing low cross into the area is just about clung onto by Neal at the second attempt with Hanson waiting to pounce in the middle.

90+5min: Hanson heads Reid's flighted cross back across goal but Wells, with a defender for company, can't take advantage and Neal can eventually gobble up the loose ball.

90+3min: RED CARD - Loft is given a straight red card for a catching Ravenhill high with a loose challenge.

90+2min: SUB - City bring on Nathan Doyle for Jones.

90+1min: SUB - Vale bring on Andrew for Dodds.

90min: There will be five minutes of time added on at the end of the match.

90min: Pope gets himself on the end of Jones' deep cross but his header is straight at McLaughlin.

88min: Hughes gets on the end of a long ball forward to feed Pope but McArdle gets across to make a vital block just as the striker looked to get a shot away deep inside City's penalty area.

86min: SUB - Vale bring on Lee Hughes for Myrie-Williams.

78min: SUB - Vale bring on Sam Morsy for Vincent.

76min: SUB - Kyel Reid is brought on for Hines.

75min: Pope climbs up to reach Vincent's flighted cross but sends his far post header a yard or so wide of McLaughlin's goal.

74min: Michael Nelson glances a header wide following Jones' lofted free-kick to the far post.

72min: Wells skips away from Purse to find himself with a sight of Neal's goal just inside Vale's half. As he goes to stride for goal, however, Duffy gets back to barge the Bermudian off the ball. City's camp appeal for penalty but, in truth, it looked on first glance more like shoulder to shoulder than a push off the ball.

70min: YELLOW CARD - Ricky Ravenhill is booked for handball as Vale try to play the ball forward midway into City's half, although the caution actually have been as a result of a number of minor other fouls during the night.

68min: Dodds tries his luck from outside the area with a half-volley but his looping effort sails a good few yards over McLaughlin's crossbar.

66min: SUB - Nahki Wells comes on for Thompson, who appears to have taken a whack moments earlier.

61min: Vale twice require some last-ditch defending to keep out City from the resulting set-piece. McArdle's initial effort from Jones' low delivery into the area is kicked clear from right in front of his own goal by Richard Duffy. The scramble in Vale's area still not over, as the ball eventually works its way out to Hanson by the far post. The striker fires for goal on the stretch but he too is denied by a clearance by his own goal-line from Duffy.

60min: Zavon Hines does brilliantly to trick his way into Vale's area before fizzing over a dangerous cross that flashes across goal before deflecting behind for a City corner.

59min: YELLOW CARD - Daniel Jones is booked for a late tackle on Darby just inside City's half.

56min: Hanson runs onto Jones' flighted delivery from a wide free-kick but his free header from around fourteen yards out goes wide of Neal's goal.

53min: Doug Loft plays Ashley Vincent into good shooting space deep inside City's area but Stephen Darby is on hand to block out the effort with a vital diving save with his legs.

49min: Hanson finds the crossbar! McHugh sends over an inviting cross for Hanson to head goalwards before Neal reaches up to flick the powerful effort against his own bar.

46min: The Bantams restart the match.

HT: Port Vale 0 Bradford City 0

45min: There will be one minute of time added on at the end of the first half.

34min: Hanson's low cross into the area finds Thompson but the attacker's connection isn't clean and Purse can boot clear.

32min: McLaughlin produces a stunning reaction save to deny Pope from a Vale free-kick! Myrie-Williams flighted cross into the area is headed back across goal by Darren Purse for the waiting Pope. With McLaughlin going to his right, Pope aims his header in the opposite direction but the Bantams 'keeper changes his body direction brilliantly to crawl out the effort with a great one-handed save.

28min: Tom Pope flashes a header across goal and wide of McLaughlin's far post following Jennison Myrie-Williams' delivery from the resulting corner.

27min: Richard Duffy's high and hanging cross is picked out of the night's sky by Louis Dodds before the forward shoots for goal with an effort on the turn from the edge of the area. The effort takes a massive deflection off a City player, completely wrong-footing Jon McLaughlin in the process, but, luckily for City, the strike flies wide of goal with the Bantams' 'keeper beaten.

22min: A nice one-two between Atkinson and Thompson gives the former the opportunity to strike for goal from just outside the area. Atkinson's left-footed effort isn't cleanly struck, however, and bobbles a yard or so wide of Chris Neal's goal.

18min: A corner into the mix from Gary Jones causes a moment's panic in the hosts' defensive ranks as the ball is allowed to drop down into Vale's box. The nearby Thompson and Carl McHugh can't quite reach the ball, however, before Griffith can hoof clear.

6min: YELLOW CARD - Anthony Griffith is booked for a late tackle on Thompson just inside City's own half.

2min: Nice combination play between Garry Thompson and Will Atkinson down City's left flank sees the latter find himself in plenty of space to put a cross in by the byline. Atkinson's near post cross is aimed for James Hanson but Liam Chilvers beats him to it to clear away.

0min: Port Vale kick off the match.
