PARKINSON WANTS WINNING START TO CHRISTMAS PERIOD

18 December 2014

Bantams boss Phil Parkinson wants to get City's Christmas period off to the best possible start with victory over Scunthorpe United this Saturday.

Following their impressive win at Chesterfield, Parkinson's men head into their match with Scunthorpe at the Coral Windows Stadium six games unbeaten in all competitions and only a single point outside the Play-Off places.

Aided by the arrival of new boss Mark Robins back in October though, opponents Scunthorpe find themselves in good form as well going into their trip to Valley Parade.

The Iron are seven games without a defeat and also won their last league game - a 2-1 home victory over Crewe Alexandra.

Parkinson clearly has plenty of respect for Scunthorpe and the work Robins has done since his arrival at Glanford Park but he wants the focus to be on his side and their efforts as City look to enter the Christmas fixture schedule still in winning form.

Parkinson said: "We've had all of our functions and events around the club now for Christmas and the players and staff are ready and focused for this period ahead.

"This Christmas period can be so important for any football club, and we feel Saturday is that start of that period for us now.

"The Chesterfield win was a big one for us because it sets us up nicely for this Christmas period and keeps confidence levels high for these games ahead.

"This period now, for me, is all about maintaining standards. That is during training and during matches.

"If we can keep getting our good players, which I feel we have a lot of, to keep working hard for each other, then I think we'll keep getting points on the board.

"We will be reminding the lads from tomorrow (Friday) really that we are going to be up against one of the forms teams in the division since Mark Robins has gone there and we are going to have to be right at our best to get a result come Saturday.

"Scunthorpe are a good side - their recent results would suggest that. They have gone to Peterborough and Barnsley and won since Mark (Robins) has took over.

"They are well-organised as you would expect under Mark because he is an experienced manager, and they also have good players for this level.

"We know what to expect from them come Saturday, however, and we'll be up for the challenge.

"We just want to focus on our players playing to the best of their ability."

Parkinson was in the crowd at Worcester City this Wednesday for Scunthorpe's marathon F.A Cup replay with the Conference North side.

The Iron eventually overcome Worcester 14-13 on penalties after extra time - an F.A Cup record for the length of a shoot-out - with the tie itself not finishing until well after 10:00pm on the night.

Scunthorpe's efforts in ensuring their progression into the F.A Cup third round will have undoubtedly meant a few sore legs around their camp this Thursday but Parkinson doesn't think fatigue will be a big issue come this Saturday.

He added: "I don't think it will have done them much good to have played such a long game but, equally, it won't have done them too much harm either.

"They had three or four main players out of their usual side for one reason or another as well, so Mark does have the ability to freshen their team up.

"We won't be making anything of it - we just want to focus on our players and giving them the best opportunity to play to the best of their ability. If they (Scunthorpe) do show some signs of tiredness in the final stages of the game, that would obviously help us, but we won't be going into the game just expecting that to happen.

"They will make changes and they will be out to make it a challenging game for us."

Parkinson revealed that he has no fresh injury worries going into this Saturday's encounter but he admitted it will be hard to stick with the same starting eleven for each of City's games over this festive period.

He continued: "Everybody is fine at the moment.

"Over this Christmas period, however, it would be unrealistic to expect to go with the same eleven all of the time. We will have to utilise the squad.

"We have done it in the past and we'll do it again.

"We have some decisions to make in terms of the team for this Saturday and for the matches going forward.

"We have confidence in every player in the building that they are good enough to play for us though. If we didn't have that confidence in them, then they wouldn't be here."
