Start of a big week

11 March 2014

Bantams boss Phil Parkinson believes City's trip to Colchester United will mark the beginning of an important week for his side as they look to maintain their current mid-table placing in the League 1 standings.

Following the Bantams' match at Colchester on Tuesday, Parkinson's men welcome Gillingham to the Coral Windows Stadium just four days later.

With both Colchester and Gillingham positioned near to City in the League 1 table, Parkinson knows relevance of two good results over the next few days.

Parkinson said: "We know this week is a big week for us.

"We will take the games we have one match at a time - Colchester first and then at home to Gillingham on the Saturday.

"These games represent good opportunities for us to get some more points on the board.

"Colchester will be buoyed by their win over Coventry on Saturday and I saw them pick up a good point at home to Rotherham the Tuesday before.

"The pitch isn't the best there and the match will probably be a bit of a scrap but we have to be ready for the fight.

"It will be a dog-fight. Ourselves and Colchester are both in and amongst it and we have to make sure we come out on top."

For Parkinson, the match will mark his first game back at Colchester as City boss after managing The U's for three years between the years of 2003 and 2006.

Parkinson added: "It is a great family club. They don't have massive fan-base but they do have a loyal set of fans and I do have some great memories there.

"I enjoyed living there, my kids went to school there and I have some great friends down in the area.

"We know Colchester as a team have an attacking threat and they are quite an open side. As a result, I wouldn't be surprised if there were chances at both ends.

"When we get our chances, we have to make sure we are clinical and we take them.

"We will be looking at them again on our way down today (Monday) and myself and Steve will aim to pick a team we feel can get us a result."

City travel to Colchester after playing in front of nearly a thousand away fans at Brentford at the weekend.

With another long journey in the pipeline, Parkinson hopes that his side can give the Bantams' followers at Colchester a performance to reward their efforts.

The Bantams chief said: "My son George got the train down from York on Saturday to sit in with our supporters and he said they were brilliant.

"It is really hurting me that we can't give them better results at the moment but we are doing everything we can. The lads and the staff are working hard on the training pitch and the back-room staff are working hard in the office in terms of our plans and preparation.

"As a team, we are doing everything we can to get the results on the pitch because this week is a big week for us.

"We have to go down to Colchester and put in the right sort of performance full of effort and commitment.

"Let's roll our sleeves up and make the supporters who go down to Colchester proud. It will be another long trip for our fans but we want to make sure they get back on their coach after the game and they are delighted with what they have seen."
