PARKINSON AGREES WITH POSTPONEMENT DECISION

7 October 2015

Bantams boss Phil Parkinson says he had no complaints at all with the decision to postpone Tuesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie with Barnsley at the Coral Windows Stadium.

Following torrential downpours at Valley Parade leading up to the beginning of the tie, referee Trevor Kettle elected to call the game off barely five minutes before the original kick off time.

After a brief inspection of the pitch, Mr Kettle had initially decided to delay the kick off time by five minutes but with the rain showing no sign of stopping, it quickly became apparent there was no other sensible decision than to postpone the tie.

Parkinson said: "The referee had looked at the forecast and it said that the rain was set to stay with us throughout the game so I think there was no choice but to call it off.

"The pitch was very, very wet due to the sheer volume of rain and you can't take any risks when it comes to player safety.

"The referee first contained me roughly five or ten minutes before kick off. Everybody had just come in from the warm-up and he asked to speak with me then.

"I can't quite remember being involved in a game that has been called off so close to kick off but it was quite an incredible deluge.

"I don't think I have seen rain like it.

"I was talking to one of our scouts earlier in the day as he drove up north from the midlands to watch a game and he said he had been going only ten miles an hour on the motorway due to the heavy rain.

"I thought to myself at the time that if that weather comes up here, which it did, then the game could be in trouble."

With four of City's squad away on international duty, the likes of Luke James, Greg Leigh and Nathan Clarke were set to start against Barnsley before the postponement.

In Leigh's case, Tuesday's tie would have been his competitive debut for the club after joining in the summer.

Parkinson added: "I feel for the supporters and for the players themselves after this.

"Players like Luke James, Greg Leigh and Nathan Clarke have waited patiently for their chance. They have been terrific around the training ground and deserved their opportunity to play.

"They were all ready to play but I'm sure they will still get to play again some time soon."

Following the postponement of Saturday's league match with Blackpool on Monday due to Rory McArdle's call up into the Northern Ireland squad, Parkinson's men now face the prospect of a weekend without football action.

Depending on when the Barnsley JPT tie is rearranged, City next match may now actually not take place until a week on Saturday at Doncaster Rovers.

Parkinson continued: "With Saturday's match being off (vs Blackpool), we have to now make sure our training schedule is correct for the next few days.

"From Monday morning having two home games in a week, we now have none.

"The decision to postpone the Blackpool game was certainly the right one. If we'd picked up an injury in defence between now and Saturday we would have needed to bring in a loan player.

"We are not completely sure yet whether our next game will be this one or Doncaster away (the following Saturday - 17 October 2015).

"We will be having meetings between the coaching staff to make sure we have our build up right for whichever situation ends up happening."
