City draw Sunderland fixture

4 March 2014

City played out a 1-1 draw with Premier League side Sunderland in a behind-closed-doors friendly fixture at a sunny Coral Windows Stadium this Tuesday afternoon.

Visiting Sunderland, whose side was made up mainly of youth and development squad players, held the half-time lead thanks to a well-taken goal by Louis Laing but City equalised after the break through Oliver McBurnie

In front of the watching Phil Parkinson and Steve Parkin, first team squad members Arron Jameson, Louie Swain, Matthew Dolan, Kyle Bennett, Chris Atkinson, Mark Yeates and Andy Gray all featured from the start.

Swain played most of the game at left back - a position he has operated in previously for City in some pre-season fixtures in the past.

Gray, Atkinson and Dolan were all given 68 minutes, with McBurnie replacing Gray in attack for the final stages of the game.

Bennett played until the 75th minute and Yeates was replaced with just under 80 minutes gone. Yeates' departure meant Swain finished the game on the left wing.

Jameson came off five minutes from the end to give apprentice shot-stopper Jack Bentley a brief run-out.

Sunderland opened the scoring after twenty minutes when Laing drove forward with purpose through the heart of City's defence before drilling home into the corner with a powerful shot from just inside the box.

City responded after the interval, however, with Bennett hitting the bar with a curling effort from the edge of the area early in the second half.

Gray was then denied from point blank range just two minutes later after his header from a Bennett cross was repelled by a stunning reaction stop from close range by Black Cats 'keeper Joel Dixon.

The Bantams had their leveller midway through the second period though when Bennett combined with McBurnie.

Another driving run from Bennett on City's right flank gave the winger the time and space to clip over a cross for the waiting McBurnie, who powered a header past Dixon at his near post.

CITY: Jameson (Bentley 85), Pollard, Heaton, King, Swain, Bennett (Mottley-Henry 75), Dolan (Wright 68), Stockdill, Atkinson (Curtis 68), Yeates (Jenkinson 80), Gray (McBurnie 68)
