McCALL PLANS TO MIX IT UP

29 August 2016

Bantams boss Stuart McCall says Tuesday's opening Checkatrade Trophy group game with Stoke City will be a good opportunity for him to have a look at some of the squad's younger players in action.

City begin their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with a Northern Group C fixture against Stoke at the Northern Commercials Stadium on Tuesday evening (kick off 7:45pm).

Trophy regulations state that the Bantams must field five out of their eleven starters from Saturday's Oldham Athletic game (or five out of their top eleven appearance makers so far) but McCall plans to make changes thereafter.

Defensive duo Stephen Darby and Matthew Kilgallon are in line for their first appearances of the season, with the pair expected to be given 45 minutes each.

Young strikers Reece Webb-Foster and Vincent Rabiega could be partnered together in attack, while apprentices Ellis Hudson and Kwame Boateng may also be named in McCall's starting line up.

German shot-stopper Rouven Sattelmaier is likely to start in net ahead of regular custodian Colin Doyle.

For opponents Stoke, given their category one academy status in this season's competition, they must ensure that at least six of their team were under 21 by 30 June this year.

McCall said: "This is a competition we will probably take one stage at a time if we are fortunate enough to progress further.

"You only have to look at what winning this trophy did for Barnsley last season. It undoubtedly gave them a springboard and helped them get to promotion in the Play-Offs.

"The format of the competition has obviously changed with Premier League and Championship sides being invited in.

"This pilot has definitely given the competition a different feel but we are all keen to give it a go and see how this new lay-out works out.

"Tuesday's match will give us the opportunity to test ourselves against players from a Premier League set-up.

"It will also give us the chance to give some of our younger players some game-time.

"We'll look to give Stephen Darby and Killa (Matthew Kilgallon) probably a half or so in the match. Hopefully Filipe Morais can get an hour under his belt as well.

"People like Romain (Vincelot) and Lawsy (Nicky Law) will probably need a rest after playing a lot of games recently."
