Stability and continuity are two favoured buzzwords in footballing circles, but change need not be feared – in fact, on occasions, it should be positively embraced.

City have certainly done that in 2016, with a summer we are fast approaching the end of having brought new owners, a new manager, new coaching staff and new players to the Northern Commercials Stadium.

There is, of course, a core of familiar faces, helping to bridge the two eras, but an exciting new dawn has broken for the Bantams, and all concerned are revelling in it.

Billy Clarke certainly falls into that category, with the Irish frontman telling the Official Bradford City App that a fresh start on and off the field has paved the way for a positive opening to the season that has Stuart McCall’s unbeaten troops flying high in the Sky Bet League One standings.

He said: “There were a lot of changes, we had a lot of personnel leave – the whole of the backroom staff left – so it was a bit strange. We didn’t know what was happening and we didn’t know which players would be coming in, or which manager would be coming in, so the first couple of weeks of the summer were still disappointing from the play-offs, but when the new manager got put in place, then you get excited and ready to come back.

“Everyone had a clean slate and started afresh, so you needed to come back in top condition and impress. You can see that some of the lads that weren’t playing last year are playing this year and are doing very well, so it’s kind of rejuvenated everyone.”

He added: “With new owners, you don’t know what they are going to come in and do, but these guys have come in and are realistic – they haven’t come in and just started throwing money around and saying we want to sign this and that player. I’ve known players that play for clubs where the owners have come in and tried signing players that have just come out of the Champions League, and it’s so unrealistic.

“The new owners have a long-term goal and I’m sure they would like to do it quicker than they suggest, but we’ve started the season well and the squad is starting to form. The manager has said we probably need a couple more players, a few more bodies in, but we’ve started pretty well and it’s been good so far.”

While further fresh faces will be most welcome, with injuries having forced McCall to shuffle his pack at times, the recruitment drive already overseen can be considered a resounding success, with early business delivering a settled squad and additions that all bring something different to the ranks.

Clarke said on the class of 2016/17: “A lot of the lads have been in throughout pre-season so they have had time to gel in. I still think there will be a few more people come in and we’ve just got to welcome them. We’re a normal group of lads so I wouldn’t say it’s hard to gel, it’s quite easy.”

Among those to have joined what will hopefully be another promotion push for the Bantams is Josh Cullen, with the West Ham United midfielder having hit the ground running during a second loan spell with the club.

Clarke said of the 20-year-old, who opened his senior goal account in the recent 2-1 victory over MK Dons: “He’s been brilliant. I was surprised he came back, I thought he would have Championship clubs begging to take him. Thankfully for us, we got him and he’s been unbelievable.

“He’s been on the top of his game for all three games he’s played so far. We’re buzzing that he’s back with us and delighted to have him – everyone is.”
